On Monday, Liverpool secured the signing of Sweden striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a reported British record fee of 125 million pounds ($168.86 million). The 25-year-old signed a long-term contract with the Premier League champions, bringing an end to a summer-long transfer dispute that had kept fans on edge.
Isak, born on September 21, 1999, in Solna, Sweden, started his career at AIK Stockholm. He made his senior debut in 2016, scoring 13 goals in 29 games. In 2017, he moved to Borussia Dortmund but struggled, scoring just once in 13 matches. In 2019, he joined Real Sociedad in Spain, where his goal-scoring ability caught attention. Newcastle signed him in 2022 for around 59 million pounds, a club record at the time.
At Newcastle, Isak became one of the world’s top strikers, scoring 62 goals in 109 games. In the 2024-25 season, his 23 league goals helped Newcastle finish fifth, and he scored in their League Cup final win over Liverpool, securing the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years. His performances earned him a spot in the 2024-25 PFA Team of the Year. For Sweden, Isak has scored 16 goals in 52 international matches since 2017.
Tensions arose when Isak did not join Newcastle’s pre-season tour and trained separately, creating a standoff with the club. Manager Eddie Howe called it a “lose-lose” situation. Isak later said Newcastle had broken promises and misled fans, stating a move was best for all. Liverpool’s reported 110 million pound bid in August set the stage for the transfer, finalized after Newcastle signed Germany forward Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart. The 6-foot-4-inch striker’s move to Anfield fulfills his dream of joining the Reds.
