Lionel Messi’s father and long-time representative, Jorge Messi, has died aged 68 after a long illness.
Newell’s Old Boys confirmed the news on social media on Saturday. Argentine newspapers Olé and La Nación also reported his death.
Jorge died in a hospital in Rosario, Argentina, according to local reports. His death comes as a major loss for the Messi family and brings an end to the life of a man who played a key role in Lionel Messi’s rise to football greatness.
Jorge was closely involved in his son’s career from the very beginning. Lionel grew up in Rosario and started his football journey with Newell’s Old Boys. His talent soon attracted attention beyond Argentina.
When Barcelona offered Messi the chance to move to Spain as a teenager, Jorge travelled with him. The move was a huge step for the young footballer. It also meant leaving behind family, friends and a familiar life in Rosario.
Jorge helped his son deal with that difficult period. He provided support as Lionel settled into a new country and began his journey towards the top of the sport.
As Messi’s career developed, Jorge took on a bigger role away from the pitch. He became one of his son’s main representatives and helped manage his professional affairs.
Jorge was involved in major decisions during Messi’s career. His work allowed Lionel to focus on football while his father dealt with many matters away from the pitch.
Despite his connection to one of the world’s most famous footballers, Jorge usually kept a low profile. He rarely sought media attention and preferred to work behind the scenes.
