Two people, including a madrasa teacher and a CNG auto-rickshaw driver, were killed in separate lightning strikes in Netrokona Sadar upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased were identified as Jamal Munsi, a teacher of a Qawmi women’s madrasa in Amtala Sapmara village, and Sabuj Mia, a CNG driver from Kailati village.
The incidents occurred around 6:30am near Khatun’s Jannat Women’s Madrasa in Amtala Sapmara and in Kailati village, respectively, amid heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Local residents said Jamal Munsi went out to a pond near the madrasa after offering Fajr prayers to catch fish during rainfall. He was struck by lightning and critically injured. Later passers-by found him lying injured and informed his family members. He was rushed to Netrokona District Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
In a separate incident the same morning, CNG driver Sabuj Mia was struck by lightning as he was leaving home with his vehicle. Locals took him to Netrokona Sadar Hospital, where he was also pronounced dead on arrival.
Netrokona Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Al Mamun Sarkar confirmed the incidents, saying police were sent to the scenes after receiving information.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdullah Al Baqiul Bari said the administration had been informed of both deaths and assured that financial assistance would be provided to the bereaved families.
