Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan may have worn a Brazil jersey at MetLife Stadium, but his support was with Morocco during their World Cup clash on Saturday.
Shakib watched the Group C match between Brazil and Morocco in New Jersey. The game ended in a 1-1 draw as Morocco earned a valuable point against the five time world champions.
In a video shared by Ajker Patrika after the match, Shakib admitted he was backing Morocco despite being dressed in Brazil colours.
“I liked the match. In my mind, I was supporting Morocco,” he said.
The former Bangladesh captain is known as a fan of Argentina, which made his Brazil jersey an interesting sight for many supporters.
Shakib later explained that the shirt was not his own choice. It had been gifted to him by Robin Miah, a well known football enthusiast and a close friend of Brazilian star Neymar.
“Robin Bhai gave me the jersey signed by Neymar. I wore it because he gave it to me; otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have. But Morocco played really well,” Shakib said.
Robin Miah later posted photos with Shakib on his Facebook page following the match.
When asked for a deeper assessment of the game, Shakib made it clear that he was there only to enjoy the occasion.
“I’m not an expert. I came to watch the game and enjoyed it,” he remarked.
Shakib is currently spending time in the United States. Away from cricket, he appears to be enjoying the World Cup atmosphere and following the tournament as a fan.
