The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit on Tuesday night recovered a significant haul of explosive-making materials during a raid on a four-storey building in Savar’s Hemayetpur.
Authorities initially suspect the premises were being used as a storage facility by the militant outfit JMB. One person have been detained, CTTC sources say. Fourteen pipe bombs have been recovered in the raid, while five have been disposed off till the filing of this report.
Acting on intelligence gathered from a suspect arrested a few days ago, police and CTTC personnel cordoned off the building in the Shyampur area at approximately 6:30pm. The formal operation inside the premises, owned by local resident Abdul Jalil, commenced at 10pm.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Alam stated that the raid followed information provided by an individual caught recently with five crude bombs and other explosives.
The property had reportedly been rented on the first of the month specifically to stockpile the explosives.
Alongside the CTTC, members of the local police and officials from National Security Intelligence (NSI) were present at the scene. A CTTC official confirmed that the unit had received specific information regarding the large quantity of manufacturing materials stored within the building.
