Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani held a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday to discuss strengthening ties between the two nations.
The discussion, which took place at a hotel in New York city, focused on several key areas including migration, trade, commerce aimed at fostering closer people-to-people connections.
President Osmani expressed deep appreciation for Bangladesh’s early recognition and ongoing support of Kosovo’s sovereignty. She acknowledged Bangladesh as one of the first nations to officially recognise Kosovo following its independence.
Highlighting Kosovo’s recent economic achievements, Osmani noted that the country has posted the highest GDP growth in its region for the second consecutive year. She also underscored Kosovo’s successful post-conflict reconstruction, describing it as one of the safest European countries with strong adherence to law and order.
President Osmani mentioned the growing Bangladeshi workforce in Kosovo, praising their significant contribution to the nation’s economy.
To build on this positive momentum, she proposed the establishment of several trade and economic partnerships, with particular emphasis on a bilateral agreement in the textile industry, an area identified for considerable mutual growth.
Chief Adviser Yunus welcomed the proposals and extended an invitation to President Osmani to visit Bangladesh. He also encouraged the organisation of a Kosovan trade delegation to Dhaka to explore new business opportunities. Additionally, Yunus supported the initiation of regular youth exchange programmes aimed at deepening people-to-people relations.
Joining the meeting, Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul highlighted the necessity of formalising a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concerning the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers. He stressed that such an agreement would facilitate safe migration and serve the interests of both countries.
Law Adviser also praised Kosovo’s hospitality, sharing that Bangladeshi workers have spoken highly of their experiences in the country.
Senior Secretary and SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed was also present during the discussions.
