Bashundhara Kings maintained their place at the summit of the Bangladesh Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Brothers Union at Kings Arena on Saturday, with Dorielton Gomes Nascimento’s first-half strike proving the difference.
Brothers, who had been thrashed 5-1 by Kings in the first leg, arrived with a far more disciplined approach this time, making the league leaders work for every chance. Kings were first to threaten in the 17th minute when Foysal Ahmed Fahim drove a powerful shot from inside the box, which goalkeeper Ishaq Akand did well to punch away.
The breakthrough came five minutes later. Rakib Hossain’s effort from the right was parried by Ishaq, and confusion between defenders Sifat and Munir allowed Saad Uddin to pounce on the loose ball. His cross found Dorielton, who finished with composure to make it 1-0.
The goal was Dorielton’s 14th of the league campaign, extending his lead at the top of the scorers’ chart. Abahani’s Souleymane Diabate is his nearest rival with nine.
Kings were briefly troubled shortly before half-time when goalkeeper Anisur Rahman Zico inexplicably handled the ball outside his area while attempting to intercept a long pass. Even Zico appeared startled by his own instinct. Jamal Bhuyan’s free-kick struck the wall and went out for a corner, which Dorielton cleared to ease the pressure.
The second half was largely uneventful, with Kings content to sit deep and protect their lead. The three points restored a three-point cushion over second-placed Abahani, who have 28 points from 14 matches. Kings lead with 31.
Mohammedan secure back-to-back wins with late Tudu brilliance
Across the city in Gazipur, Mohammedan produced a nervy but ultimately convincing 3-1 win over PWD at Shahid Barkat Stadium, completing back-to-back victories under caretaker coach Abdul Kaiyum Sentu following the departure of Alfaz Ahmed.
Mohammedan made a bright start when Jewel Mia met Arif Hossain’s right-wing cross with a precise near-post header in the 15th minute, giving goalkeeper Rahul Hossain no chance.
PWD responded with purpose. Ali Uzair rattled off a powerful free-kick in the 19th minute that Mahin Hossain did well to keep out, and the visitors continued to press. Mohammad Sharif squandered their clearest opportunity in the 41st minute, finding himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper following a defensive mix-up but failing to hit the target.
Mohammedan’s nerves were tested further when PWD equalised with five minutes remaining. A clever backheel flick from Tarek Marat released Mohammad Abdullah, who kept his composure to slot past the goalkeeper and level at 1-1.
The tension lasted barely two minutes. Sourav Dewan was fouled inside the box and Uzbekistan midfielder Muzaffar Muzaffarov stepped up to convert the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to restore Mohammedan’s lead.
The points were sealed in stoppage time by a moment of individual brilliance from Rafayel Tudu, who collected the ball in his own half, beat three defenders in succession, bypassed a fourth inside the area and finished with a low, composed shot. It was a goal worthy of winning any match.
Mohammedan move to 17 points and fifth in the table with their fourth win of the campaign.
