A fictional neighbourhood in Dhaka becomes the setting for Khupri, an upcoming web series blending crime, mystery, revenge and romance.
Directed by Syed Rishad and scripted by Syed Shamser Tarif, the three-season series revolves around two lanes—Chapani and Takma.
A long-running rivalry between the residents of the two areas gradually escalates into a web of drug dealing, smuggling, online fraud and murder.
Jasim Dhali leads Chapani lane, while Kohinur is the influential figure in Takma. An old vendetta lies at the heart of their conflict, drawing the two sides deeper into the criminal underworld.
A coffee shop named Khupori also plays a central role in the story.
A popular hangout for local residents, the café gradually becomes connected to several criminal incidents as investigators begin tracing clues surrounding the area’s growing crime network.
The investigation is led by Jahanara, an administrative officer who attempts to uncover the criminal operation through careful information gathering and systematic investigation.
However, the reason behind her unusual interest in the neighbourhood will also become an important mystery in the story.
Actor Kochi Khondokar said the series will present him in a role unlike anything he has played before.
“I have portrayed many different characters throughout my career, but this is the first time audiences will see me in a role like this. When the director offered me the part, I took some time to think about it. I hope viewers will not be disappointed when the series is released,” he said.
Director Syed Rishad said Khupori has been planned across three seasons. The first season is titled Forma-Takkhak, the second Takkhak-Bhikkhuk and the third Bhikkhuk-Bondhutto.
Shooting for all seven episodes of the first season has already been completed.
The makers plan to release the series on a local and international OTT platform around mid-August, while preparations for the next phase are already underway.
Producer Mohammad Russell Khan, whose production company is working on the project with Brainbasket, said the series would offer audiences a different viewing experience.
“With a thrilling story, sustained suspense and bold characterisation, viewers will see something new in Khupori. We have tried to move away from familiar storytelling patterns and present the series in a different way,” he said.
The cast includes Kochi Khondokar, Dilruba Hossain Doyel, Bashar Bappi, Iqbal Hossain, Jannatul Ritu, Anisa Diya, Aleha, Tafsir Swaron and Monir Hossain, among others.
