BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said preparations are complete to take ailing BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia abroad for advanced treatment, but her current physical condition does not allow for such a journey.
“At present, she is not in a condition to be taken abroad,” he said. “If her health improves, we will then consider whether taking her abroad is possible.”
He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon at a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
Fakhrul also urged party leaders, activists and the public not to gather in front of Evercare Hospital, where Khaleda Zia is undergoing treatment.
“People across the country are worried about Khaleda Zia’s illness. Countless people are gathering at the hospital. This is causing embarrassment for the hospital authorities and doctors, and it is disrupting medical activities,” he said.
“I request everyone. please do not crowd the hospital.”
Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital on 23 November after her health deteriorated. She has been receiving treatment in the CCU since Thursday.
Leaders from various political parties and public figures have been visiting the hospital, while many BNP supporters have also been gathering outside.
Meanwhile, Mahdi Amin, adviser to BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, said in a Facebook post that if Khaleda Zia’s condition improves, her family plans to take her to London for advanced treatment.
He added that a special air ambulance equipped with modern technology is being arranged in preparation.
‘Tarique Rahman is my leader’
Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said he has nothing to add regarding a Facebook post by Tarique Rahman, saying, “There is no need for me to answer this question.”
When asked to explain the status posted by Tarique Rahman and whether he saw any obstacle to his return to the country, the BNP Secretary General said, “I cannot explain this. Because he is the party’s acting chairman, my leader, the head of the party. He has posted it. At this moment, I cannot comment on it.
“You can assume the post as his statement. No further explanation is needed for it.”
