The government has appointed former High Court judge Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury as the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

According to an official notification, President Mohammed Shahabuddin made the appointment based on the recommendations of a selection committee, exercising authority under the National Human Rights Commission Ordinance, 2023.

In addition to the chairperson, the government has appointed four individuals to serve as commissioners.

These newly appointed members include Md Nur Khan, a former member of the Inquiry Commission on Enforced Disappearances, and Md Shariful Islam, a professor in the Department of Political Science at Dhaka University.

The remaining two commissioners are Nabila Idris, who also served as a former member of the Inquiry Commission on Enforced Disappearances, and human rights activist Elira Dewan.

The Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued the notification regarding these appointments on Thursday.

The order, signed by Joint Secretary (Drafting) Mohammad Asaduzzaman Nur, stated that the appointments would take effect immediately.

Copies of the notification have been forwarded to various high-level government offices for necessary action, including the cabinet secretary, the principal secretary to chief adviser, and the secretary of the National Human Rights Commission.
