A case has been filed following the broad daylight shooting of a Juba Dal activist at Alimiahart Bazar in Raozan Upazila, Chattogram.
The deceased, identified as Muhammad Abdul Majid, 50, was a resident of the Alimiahart Bazar area in Purba Gujra Union. He was an active member of the Purba Gujra Union Juba Dal.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30pm on Wednesday.
According to eyewitnesses, Majid was walking home from the market when a group of masked armed youths arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at him. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Majid was rescued by locals and rushed to the Raozan Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared him dead. Hospital sources confirmed that the victim sustained three bullet wounds to his chest, waist, and above the eye.
On Thursday, the victim’s wife, Shahnaz Begum, filed a murder case at Raozan Police Station. The case names three individuals, while another three remain unidentified. Sajedul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raozan Police Station, stated that a verbal altercation had reportedly taken place between the victim and the suspects roughly 20 minutes before the shooting.
He noted that the names of the accused are being withheld to facilitate the investigation and confirmed that police operations are underway to apprehend those involved.
Violence in Raozan has seen a marked increase following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024. Various sources indicate that 21 murders have occurred in the upazila during this period, 15 of which are alleged to be politically motivated. Furthermore, more than 350 people have been injured in over a hundred instances of shootings and clashes.
