Nestled amid red earthen trails, tranquil wetlands alive with migratory birds, and the vibrant energy of youth, Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Monday marks a significant milestone as it enters its 56th year.
After completing 55 years of academic journey and institutional growth, Bangladesh’s only fully residential public university continues to stand as a symbol of pride, heritage, and intellectual freedom.
JU formally began its academic activities on 12 January, 1971, with just 150 students. Its foundation, however, was laid earlier on 20 August, 1970, through an ordinance that established the institution under the name Jahangirnagar Muslim University.
Following Bangladesh’s independence, the university was renamed Jahangirnagar University in 1973. Under the leadership of renowned chemist Dr Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, JU started its journey with four departments which are Economics, Geography, Mathematics, and Statistics.
Over the decades, that modest beginning has grown into a comprehensive institution comprising 34 departments and four institutes.
JU has carved out a strong position in science and research, highlighted by the establishment of the country’s largest research facility, the Wazed Mia Science Research Centre. The campus currently accommodates students in 11 male and 10 female residential halls, while modern multi-storey residential buildings for teachers and officers are under construction.
Surrounded by lush greenery and iconic red-brick architecture, the campus has long been regarded as a rare ecological haven, often described as a “piece of paradise” within the academic landscape of Bangladesh.
Beyond academics, JU is widely known as a centre of free thought and cultural expression, earning it the affectionate title of the country’s “cultural capital.” From the Greek-style open-air theatre introduced by eminent dramatist Selim Al Deen to landmarks such as Amar Ekushey and Sangshaptak, the campus resonates with artistic and historical significance.
More recently, JU commemorated the July mass uprising by constructing Odommo 24, the country’s first monument dedicated to the movement – reflecting JU’s long-standing tradition of resistance and activism.
Environmental awareness initiatives such as the annual Butterfly Fair and Bird Fair further underscore the university’s commitment to sustainability and public engagement.
Despite its many achievements, the university’s journey has not been without challenges. Students continue to express frustration over the persistence of manual, non-automated administrative systems in an increasingly digital era, particularly in processes such as result publication and form submission.
Limitations at the campus medical centre, including shortages of medicines and modern equipment, remain a concern. In several departments, inadequate classroom and laboratory facilities relative to student numbers also hinder academic activities.
Additionally, delays in disciplinary proceedings against teachers accused of instigating attacks on students during the July movement have caused unease among the student body.
The university administration, however, maintains that due process is ongoing and that accountability will be ensured. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sohel Ahmed has expressed optimism that ongoing development projects will soon alleviate accommodation and classroom shortages.
The anniversary celebrations began at 9:30am at the Mritmoncho, drawing together current students and alumni. The day’s programme includes flag hoisting, a colourful procession, musical performances, and a friendly football match in the afternoon.
Festivities will conclude in the evening with a vibrant cultural programme organised by the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU).
As migratory birds from Siberia find refuge in JU’s wetlands each winter, alumni from across the country return on this day to reconnect with their alma mater.
With its enduring legacy of intellect, creativity, and resistance, JU is expected to continue illuminating the path of higher education for generations to come.
