Following the resignation of the proctor of Jahangirnagar University (JU), four assistant proctors have also stepped down from their positions. Their exemption from duty was confirmed in a press release issued by the university’s Public Relations Office on Thursday.
According to the notification, the assistant proctors were relieved of their duties following their respective applications.
Those who resigned are Professor Mohammad Abdur Razzaq of Zoology Department, Professor Shamima Nasreen Jolly of Botany Department, Professor Md Alamgir Kabir of Physics Department, and Assistant Professor Jannatul Ferdous of Public Health and Informatics Department.
Earlier, the university administration approved the resignation of Professor AKM Rashidul Alam from Department of Environmental Sciences, who had applied to step down from the post of proctor.
In response to the vacancies, the university issued two separate office orders on Wednesday.
Professor Md Jakir Hossain of Philosophy Department has been appointed as the temporary proctor, while Associate Professor Abdus Sattar of the same department has been appointed as an assistant proctor for a two-year term.
Both appointments became effective from the date of issue.
The mass resignations follow a period of intense student unrest. Students began protesting for the proctor’s resignation after the alleged rape and attempted murder of a female student on campus on 12 May, accusing the administration of failing to ensure security.
As the movement escalated, protesters locked the proctor’s office on 16 May.
On Thursday, after a period of two months and 13 days, the protesting students finally unlocked the office following the departure of the former proctor.
