Newcastle United’s growing habit of letting winning positions slip came back to haunt them again as Chelsea fought back from two goals down to claim a 2–2 draw at St James’ Park on 20 December.
Eddie Howe’s side appeared in control after a dominant first-half display, with Nick Woltemade scoring twice inside the opening 20 minutes. But second-half goals from Reece James and Joao Pedro ensured Chelsea escaped with a point that, on the balance of the second half, could easily have been three. The result means Newcastle have now dropped 13 points from winning positions this season.
The hosts made an uncharacteristically sharp start. Just four minutes in, Anthony Gordon robbed Wesley Fofana of possession and the move ended with Jacob Murphy crossing from the right. Gordon’s effort was only parried by Robert Sanchez and Woltemade reacted quickest to smash home the rebound, drawing loud acclaim from the home crowd only days after his own goal in the derby defeat at Sunderland.
Newcastle continued to play with fluency and purpose, with Sandro Tonali dictating play from midfield. Their second goal arrived in the 20th minute, though celebrations were briefly delayed by a VAR check. Gordon again played a key role, beating Reece James to the ball before delivering a cross that Woltemade flicked past Sanchez with an outstretched toe.
Chelsea struggled badly before the break, despite occasional flashes from Cole Palmer. Pedro Neto had the ball in the net shortly before half-time, but the goal was disallowed after he used his arm. Woltemade could have completed a hat-trick when he volleyed narrowly wide from another Gordon cross, while Sanchez was visibly frustrated with his defence as the interval arrived.
Chelsea emerged with renewed purpose after the restart. Reece James reduced the deficit with a superb free-kick that curled and dipped over the wall, leaving Aaron Ramsdale stranded. The goal shifted the momentum, with Moises Caicedo driving the midfield and Chelsea’s full-backs pushing higher.
Newcastle felt they should have had a penalty when Trevoh Chalobah challenged Gordon in the area, but play continued and Chelsea quickly drew level. Joao Pedro, a player Howe had been keen to sign in the summer, made a decisive impact. After controlling a long kick forward, he surged into space and finished calmly into the bottom corner to complete the comeback.
Both sides had chances to win it late on. Reece James produced a crucial tackle to deny Harvey Barnes after a clever pass from Yoane Wissa, while Newcastle were left aggrieved in stoppage time when another challenge on Barnes was checked by VAR and no penalty was awarded.
