Vote counting is currently underway for the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (Jnucsu) election, with early results revealing a head-to-head contest between candidates of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir for the posts of vice president (VP) and assistant general secretary (AGS).

Election Commission has announced results of 14 out of a total of 39 centres from the central control room set up at the university’s central auditorium on Wednesday afternoon.

In the published results from 14 centres, AKM Rakib, the candidate of Oikyoboddho Nirbheek Jobian panel – backed by Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, and general students – is leading in the VP post.

He has received 1,673 votes. His closest rival, Riazul Islam, the candidate of the Shibir-backed Adomya Jobian Oikya panel, has received a total of 1,424 votes.

However, the Shibir-backed candidates are leading in the posts of General Secretary (GS) and AGS. For the GS post, Shibir’s candidate Abdul Alim Arif has received 1,587 votes, while Chhatra Dal’s Khadijatul Kubra has received 793 votes.

For the AGS post, Shibir’s Masud Rana has received a total of 1,466 votes. His closest rival, Chhatra Dal’s BM Atikur Rahman Tanzil, has received 1,337 votes.

Election Commission stated that the results of the remaining 25 centres, including hall unions, have not been announced yet. These centre results will be announced gradually.

Voting for the Jnucsu and hall union elections was held on Tuesday across 178 booths in 39 centres. Vote counting began afterwards. Around 9pm, counting was temporarily suspended due to machine errors. Vote counting resumed after 12:30am.
