Officials on the Channel Island of Jersey have issued a caution regarding the dangers associated with images generated by artificial intelligence (AI), urging stricter oversight of digital image technologies.
Jersey Information Commissioner Paul Vane highlighted the risks posed by the rapid proliferation of AI tools capable of producing realistic images and videos of people without their permission. He stated, “He emphasized the need to educate communities, especially young people, on ethical and safe AI use.”
Vane, alongside representatives from more than 60 jurisdictions, released a joint statement expressing concern over the misuse of AI. This warning comes amid a local police investigation into a social media account that circulated inappropriate AI-generated material aimed at school staff.
In collaboration with authorities in Guernsey, Jersey officials have also issued advice to safeguard individuals. Recommendations include restricting personal information shared online, exercising caution when using AI platforms, and teaching children to engage responsibly with AI technologies.
This initiative reflects a wider international apprehension about deepfakes created with AI and their potential to cause harm, a concern that is increasingly relevant for internet users everywhere, including in Bangladesh, where awareness of online safety is becoming more crucial.
