The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD)-backed panel has announced an eight-point manifesto ahead of the upcoming Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) election, scheduled for October 15.
The manifesto was officially unveiled by vice-president candidate Sajjad Hossain Hridoy at Buddijibi Square on campus around 3pm on Wednesday.
Senior leaders of BNP’s student wing, including JCD Central General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, Vice President Ziauddin Baset, all panel candidates, and leaders of the university’s JCD unit, were present during the announcement.
One of the key pledges in the manifesto is to develop a modern, student-friendly campus with a strong emphasis on education and research.
The panel also pledges to ensure students’ access to quality food and accommodation, guarantee campus safety, and provide legal assistance where needed.
Other commitments include, creating a safe and inclusive environment for female students, upgrading and expanding campus transportation services, enhancing healthcare services and maintaining a hygienic campus environment, promoting literature, culture, sports, and recreational activities, offering career development support and expanding employment opportunities
Speaking at the event, VP candidate Hridoy said, “Many students were eager to know about our manifesto. Before drafting it, we reached out to students across campus to understand their needs. This eight-point plan reflects their concerns. Our manifesto is shaped by student voices, and we are committed to its full implementation.”
Addressing the gathering, JCD Central General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir referenced alleged irregularities in past student union elections at Dhaka and Jahangirnagar universities. “Despite the irregularities in DUCSU and JU elections, we’ve chosen to participate in good faith. After nearly three decades, student union elections are finally being held at Chittagong University. We believe this panel has the ability to deliver on its promises,” he said.
This year, the Cucsu and hall union elections will see 415 candidates contesting for 26 Cucsu positions under 13 different panels. Additionally, 486 candidates are vying for posts in 14 hall unions.
A total of 27,518 registered students are expected to cast their votes at nearly 700 booths across 15 polling centres.
