Japan has lifted the tsunami warning issued after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off its northern coastline.
The quake occurred on Monday at 4:53pm (07:53 GMT) in waters off Iwate Prefecture along the Pacific coast, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), reports Al Jazeera.
Tremors were felt across a vast area, with buildings shaking in Tokyo, several hundred kilometres to the south.
Authorities initially warned of tsunami waves reaching up to 3 metres (10ft). About two hours after the quake, waves measuring as high as 80cm (2ft 7 inches) were recorded. The warning was later downgraded to a tsunami advisory before being lifted.
