Japan has handed over 12 rescue speed boats to Bangladesh for deployment in 12 disaster-prone coastal districts to strengthen emergency response during floods, cyclones and tidal surges.
The handover ceremony was held at the Golden Fiber Glass Conference Room in Narayanganj on Tuesday under the Disaster Risk Management Enhancement Project, with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, said a press release.
The boats will be deployed in Barishal, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Bhola, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Cox’s Bazar, Khulna, Barguna, Jhalokati, Chattogram and Noakhali. They will support emergency communication, search and rescue operations during water-related emergencies.
JICA Bangladesh Office Chief Representative Junko Takahashi said the newly provided vessels would enhance emergency response capacity and contribute to the safety of vulnerable communities. “Japan has long stood beside Bangladesh as a trusted friend and development partner. Today’s handover reflects our shared commitment to building a safer and more resilient Bangladesh through practical disaster risk reduction measures,” she said.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister Iqbal Hossain, Japanese Ambassador Saida Shinichi, Member of Parliament Abul Kalam, Disaster Management Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam and Disaster Management Department Director General Razwanur Rahman attended the ceremony.
Forty-three additional shallow-water rescue boats are planned for distribution in northern and northeastern flood-prone districts, including Sunamganj, Habiganj, Sylhet, Netrokona and Jamalpur, in response to severe floods and climate change risks.
