A female leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was hacked on the head with a cleaver while campaigning in the capital’s Kadamtoli on Wednesday afternoon.
The victim, identified as Kazi Maria Islam Baby, is a Rukan of Jamaat-e-Islami. The incident occurred in Ward 52 of Kadamtoli during a campaign drive for Syed Joynul Abedin, the party’s candidate for the Dhaka-4 constituency.
According to Islam, the attack took place after a group of individuals obstructed their campaign trail, claiming they did not recognise the candidate. As the situation grew tense and the campaigners entered a narrow alley, an unidentified assailant suddenly struck her on the head with a sharp weapon and fled.
Following the assault, a rickshaw puller rescued her and took her to a local doctor. She returned home after receiving primary treatment, which included four stitches to her head wound.
Sheikh Ashraful Zaman, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kadamtoli Police Station, confirmed on Wednesday evening that a female Jamaat activist had been injured. He stated that the police are currently investigating how the injury occurred.
However, the OC noted that no written complaint had been filed regarding the incident at that time.
