Jamaat-e-Islami has postponed its previously announced grand assembly scheduled for 3 January due to certain undergraduate admission tests which are scheduled to be taking place on the same day.
The matter was disclosed in a statement posted on the party’s verified Facebook page on Sunday evening.
In the statement, the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said, “The previously announced grand assembly of Jamaat-e-Islami on 3 January is being postponed because the undergraduate (honors) first-year admission tests for the 2025-26 academic year of nine agriculture and agriculture-dominant universities across the country are scheduled for that day.”
Following a decision by the party’s Central Executive Council, Jamaat-e-Islami had recently called for a grand assembly in Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan to address the overall political situation, including the demand for the arrest and trial of the killers of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson and July Warrior Sharif Osman Hadi, and the recovery of illegal arms.
By now, preparatory meetings of the grand assembly implementation committee had already been held at Jamaat’s central office in several phases leading up to the grand assembly.
This follows Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Literature and Culture Secretary Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad had sent a letter to the party requesting the postponement of Jamaat’s assembly on Saturday.
The letter stated that the agriculture cluster test is scheduled from 2pm to 3pm on 3 January, with thousands of students expected to attend. The letter went on to say that Jamaat’s grand assembly on the same day “could cause traffic congestion across the city and shatter the dreams of thousands of students.”
Jamaat-e-Islami has yet to announce a new date for the grand assembly.
