Rezaul Karim, the secretary of Sreebardy Upazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, died on Wednesday night following a clash with BNP activists in Sherpur.
He passed away at approximately 9:45pm while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. The death was confirmed by Nuruzzaman Badal, the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for the Sherpur-3 constituency in the upcoming 13th parliamentary election.
The clash broke out earlier on Wednesday afternoon at the Jhenaigati Upazila Parishad ground during a programme organised by the upazila administration.
Sherpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kamrul Islam stated that Rezaul Karim was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital with severe head injuries. Professionally, the deceased served as a lecturer in Arabic at Fatehpur Fazil Madrasa.
In a related development, the central committee of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has suspended the 41-member convener committee of its Sherpur district unit.
The suspension was announced in a press release issued on Wednesday by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, who noted that the order would remain in effect until further notice. The suspended committee was led by Convener Sirajul Islam and Member Secretary ABM Mamunur Rashid Palash.
