A high-level parliamentary delegation of Jamaat-e-Islami will travel to Iran to attend the funeral and state mourning programme of former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following an invitation from the Iranian government.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party confirmed the upcoming visit.
According to the statement, the delegation will leave Dhaka on 3 July and will participate in the funeral and official mourning ceremonies of Iran’s former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Hussaini Khamenei.
The visit will continue until 9 July.
The delegation will be led by Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Mujibur Rahman and will include Md Nurul Amin, Md Keramat Ali, and SM Khaliduzzaman.
Jamaat said the team will express condolences and solidarity with the government and people of Iran by attending the state programmes.
During the visit, the delegation is expected to hold courtesy meetings with senior Iranian leaders and other government officials, according to the schedule.
The party said the visit is expected to strengthen longstanding fraternal ties, mutual understanding, and bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and Iran.
Jamaat also expressed gratitude to the Iranian government for the invitation and for facilitating arrangements for the visit.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, was killed at his residence on the first day of a US-Israeli airstrikes, which reportedly began with declarations aimed at toppling the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ruling establishment.
Khamenei has served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since late 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini following his death.
