Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said corruption must be eliminated completely, warning that addressing only its “leaves or branches” would fail to bring real change.
He said corruption needs to be uprooted to ensure good governance and accountability in Bangladesh.
Speaking at an election rally at Mehendiganj Government RC College ground in Barishal on Friday morning, he criticised the existing legal system, saying it is unjust that major corrupt figures remain beyond the law while minor offenders are punished.
He said that if Jamaat is entrusted with running the country, it will neither engage in extortion nor allow anyone else to do so, reports UNB.
Referring to the party’s commitment to the ideals of the July Revolution, Shafiqur Rahman said that if given the opportunity to govern, Jamaat would ensure fair distribution of rights and work to recover laundered money, identifying economic recovery as a key priority.
He also said a Jamaat-e-Islami government would prioritise economic development and upgrade communication infrastructure in the long-neglected Hijla–Mehendiganj area.
Referring to the hacking of his X account, Shafiqur Rahman said an attack was launched against him but backfired, adding that truth can never be suppressed and that he rejects a brand of politics that breeds extortionists, murderers and looters.
Calling for political change, he said he had long protected the party and, if given the opportunity, would now work to protect the country.
Although the rally was scheduled to start at 11am, Shafiqur Rahman arrived an hour earlier, with the venue already packed with supporters. The programme was chaired by Maulana Shahidul Islam, Ameer of Mehendiganj upazila Jamaat.
