Former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh and current Rajya Sabha member Harsh Vardhan Shringla has stated that Jamaat-e-Islami will be unable to come to power if elections in Bangladesh are held in a free and fair manner.
Speaking to journalists in Darjeeling, West Bengal, on Friday, Shringla remarked that the party’s chances of assuming power are low unless there is electoral rigging, reported The Telegraph India.
He pointed out that actual vote share of Jamaat remains between five and seven per cent, a figure often achieved only with the support of other political organisations.
Regarding the upcoming national polls, Shringla noted that while the Indian government has maintained that all political parties should participate in the electoral process, that is currently not the case.
The former diplomat also addressed the decision regarding Bangladesh’s refusal to play in the T20 World Cup in India, labelling it a “big mistake.” He further argued that the decisions being made by the current administration are detrimental to the sports sector of Bangladesh.
