After a long wait, the overall process of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election has finally concluded. Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has congratulated all candidates who contested in the polls.
In his congratulatory message, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman extended warm greetings to all contestants and the newly elected members of JUCSU.
In a Facebook post on Saturday (September 13), he wrote: “Alhamdulillah, the overall process of the Jahangirnagar University student council election has been successfully completed. I congratulate all candidates who contested in the polls, and especially those who have been elected to various positions with the highest number of votes.”
Reminding the newly elected representatives of the heavy responsibility entrusted upon them, he said: “We hope they will remain mindful of their duty and give utmost importance to safeguarding the trust placed in them by the student community.”
The results showed independent candidate Abdur Rashid Jitu elected as Vice President (VP), while Mazharul Islam of the Shibir-backed panel won the General Secretary (GS) post. Ferdous Al Hasan and Ayesha Siddiqa Meghla were elected as Assistant General Secretaries (AGS) for male and female students, respectively.
The voting process, which began on the morning of September 11 and concluded by evening, was followed by nearly 42 hours of counting. Ultimately, the Shibir-backed panel claimed 20 positions, including three of the top four posts.
Despite the high voter turnout and decisive outcome, the election atmosphere remained tense. Allegations of vote manipulation and administrative bias surfaced shortly after voting commenced, leading to the withdrawal of five panels from the race. In total, 177 candidates contested for 25 positions, including VP, GS, and AGS posts.
The Jamaat Ameer also thanked the university administration, election commission, and all stakeholders for ensuring the successful completion of the polls. He further praised the sincerity and dedication of the government and law enforcement agencies in facilitating the process.
In conclusion, he wished a bright future for all students of Jahangirnagar University and expressed hope that with the joint efforts of elected student leaders, students, administration, and faculty members, the university would reach its desired goals.
