Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and opposition leader in Parliament, has alleged that the results of the February 12 election were altered through “election engineering” despite the country’s youth voting for change.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at an Iftar Mahfil organised by the Kafrul North and South Thana branches of Jamaat-e-Islami at the Monipur High School premises on Wednesday.
Addressing the gathering, Shafiqur stated that while party workers did not wish to sacrifice their lives for the previous vote, resulting in many leaving the polling centres, they would maintain a “strict vigil” at every station in the next election.
He asserted that they would stand firm to protect the people’s right to vote, even at the cost of their lives.
The opposition leader further pledged to represent the public’s interests in Parliament and secure their rights. He also issued a warning to the ruling party to immediately cease nationwide extortion, stating that a strong resistance would otherwise be built alongside the public.
During his speech, the ameer thanked the ruling party for following the policy announced by Jamaat-e-Islami regarding the refusal of tax-free cars and government plots, as well as the commitment to repatriate the bodies of deceased expatriates with due honour.
The programme was chaired by Mohammad Selim Uddin, Central Executive Council Member of Jamaat-e-Islami and ameer of Dhaka City North.
