Singer and actor IU has sparked discussion online after using a song by her former boyfriend Jang Ki-ha as the background music for a recent social media post, writes the Korea Times.
On Thursday, IU shared dozens of photos with her followers, offering glimpses into her recent life.
The post included makeup-free selfies, behind-the-scenes moments from a fashion shoot and a birthday meal featuring traditional seaweed soup.
However, it was the music accompanying the post that drew the most attention.
IU chose Living The Carefree Life by Kiha and the Faces, the closing track from the band’s 2009 debut studio album.
The choice quickly prompted speculation because Jang Ki-ha and IU were once one of South Korea’s most prominent celebrity couples.
The pair confirmed their relationship in 2015 after reportedly dating since 2013.
They announced their breakup in 2017.
Some social media users questioned IU’s decision to use a song by her former partner, while others argued that the reaction was an overinterpretation of a simple music choice.
The discussion was further fuelled by Jang’s current relationship with actress Yoon Ga-yi, who is 18 years younger than him.
Some critics described IU’s choice as inconsiderate, while others dismissed the criticism.
The post also attracted attention following recent reports about IU’s breakup with actor Lee Jong-suk.
Some users expressed surprise that she had chosen music by another former partner soon after the reports.
The latest discussion adds to a series of controversies surrounding IU this year.
She previously faced criticism over alleged historical distortion related to her drama Perfect Crown.
The singer also recently postponed concerts in Goyang and the release of her sixth full-length album after experiencing worsening symptoms of patulous Eustachian tube, a condition affecting the ear.
