Islami Andolan Bangladesh has expressed willingness to sign the July Charter despite differences on certain issues, in the interest of national unity and consensus.
Islami Andolan Joint Secretary General Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman disclosed the decision at a press briefing after a meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at the National Consensus Commission (NCC) on Sunday.
After an extensive discussion, a draft of the July Charter had been finalized, he said.
“We may not agree with some points, but for the sake of national interest and consensus, we are ready to sign the July Charter as the upcoming national election must be held on the basis of it.”
Ataur Rahman, also a spokesperson for Islami Andolan, noted that the chief adviser spoke of a spontaneous and joyful election.
“We believe that will only be possible when reforms are completed and implemented, when a fair environment for polls exists, voters’ rights are valued, and voting takes place under the proportional representation system. The chief adviser warned that if political parties fail to reach consensus, danger may arise,” he said.
On the future of the NCC, Ataur also said a proposal was raised to extend its tenure.
“We supported that proposal, because although the July Charter draft has been finalised, its implementation framework is not yet completed. Until the legal foundation of the July Charter is settled, the work of the commission will not end,” he added.
