Bangladesh edged closer to sealing the second Test on Monday in Mirpur, but Ireland refused to yield, reaching lunch on 263 for 8 after a session defined by Curtis Campher’s exceptional resilience and a lower-order stand that tested the hosts’ patience on the final day.
Ireland, chasing an improbable 509 to win, resumed with little margin for error yet played with admirable composure. Campher was the anchor throughout, scoring an unbeaten 63 from 203 deliveries, an innings built on defensive discipline rather than scoring intent. He left astutely, absorbed pressure for long stretches and repeatedly frustrated Bangladesh’s most experienced bowlers.
Harry Tector had earlier provided the platform for Ireland’s resistance with a fluent 50 from 80 balls before falling lbw to Hasan Murad, ending a promising innings that featured seven boundaries. Before him, small contributions from Paul Stirling, Cade Carmichael and Stephen Doheny offered flickers of stability but not enough to shift the match’s direction. Lorcan Tucker’s 16 and Andy McBrine’s 21 further slowed Bangladesh’s march, while Jordan Neill, who made 30 from 46, played with refreshing intent until Mehidy Hasan Miraz prised him out.
Through it all, Campher remained immovable. By lunch he had found support from Gavin Hoey, who reached 18 not out off 38 balls. Bangladesh’s attack continued to ask the right questions but lacked the final breakthrough. Taijul Islam bowled tirelessly for figures of 3 for 94 from 34 overs, extracting drift and subtle turn, while Hasan Murad’s 2 for 44 from 18 overs brought key dismissals at important moments. Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 2 for 46 from 24 accurate overs, maintaining constant pressure, but wickets arrived slower than expected. Khaled Ahmed chipped in with 1 for 38 but also watched several edges fall short as Ireland defended doggedly.
