Iran has appointed a three-member body to oversee the country’s transition following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Officials said the president, the head of the judiciary and a senior jurist from the Guardian Council will jointly manage state affairs during the interim period.
Under Iran’s constitution, the responsibility for selecting a new supreme leader now rests with the Assembly of Leadership Experts. The council of clerics must appoint Khamenei’s successor as swiftly as possible.
However, convening its members may prove difficult amid security concerns, as Iran remains under attack from the United States and Israel, according to the BBC.
Khamenei assumed the position of supreme leader on the same day that Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic, died.
