Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital has received a donation worth of Tk 17 crore for a drug called Alteplase from the Netherlands. It is a revolutionary thrombolytic drug used in treating strokes and heart attacks.
Alteplase is capable of dissolving dangerous blood clots in both the brain and heart. Each vial of this drug can cost around Tk 50,000, which can be unaffordable for a lot of patients in our country.
But, thanks to the brilliant efforts made by Dr. Shirsha Shreyan, an intern doctor from RMC’s 61st batch, this drug will be available to the patients of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital completely free of charge. He collaborated with many international organisations such as the World Stroke Organization, Direct Relief and Angel’s Initiative to secure this valuable donation for our country. Dr. Azizul Haque Azad, a renowned medicine specialist of the country, also guided and helped him in this endeavour.
This donation will bring new hope to the hearts of the underprivileged patients in Rajshahi who otherwise could not afford this drug. This will surely save a lot of innocent lives.
An intern’s brave initiative goes on to show us just how much impact a single doctor’s dedication to the poor patients’ well-being can have. This should serve as a bright example for all the young doctors in the country.
