Sarjis Alam, the chief organiser of the National Citizen Party for the northern region, said on Monday that the July Charter remains incomplete and that the interim government cannot move toward an election with such a document.
An election can only be considered after fulfilling this responsibility, he said.
Sarjis made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting of the National Citizen Party (NCP) at the Tangail Press Club.
He said, “Among the three major political parties in the country, not a single one has signed the July Charter. The party that led the July uprising from the front has no representation among the signatories.”
“NCP will not tolerate any institutional arbitrariness. Despite no legal barriers, the NCP requested the Shapla symbol, yet the Election Commission has started making excuses. We’ve made it clear — we want the Shapla symbol, and we will contest the upcoming election with it. If it’s not granted, we will claim it by force,” he added.
The NCP leader also said, “We believe there’s no question of denying us the Shapla symbol. If necessary, the NCP will take to the streets to demand it. Without amending the July Charter, the interim government cannot even consider holding an election.”
The meeting was presided over by district NCP coordinator Masudur Rahman. Saifullah Haidar, divisional organising secretary for Dhaka, and Saiful Islam, a central member of the NCP, were also present at the event.
