Inter Milan completed a domestic double on Wednesday after beating Lazio 2-0 in the Italian Cup final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
An own goal from Adam Marusic and a first-half finish from Lautaro Martinez gave Inter control before the break. Cristian Chivu’s side then shut the game down with little trouble to secure the club’s 10th Italian Cup and add it to the Serie A title.
“We deserved the trophies after a good season,” Chivu told Mediaset.
“Winning the league and cup is never something you can take for granted. We’re very happy.”
Inter grabbed the lead after 14 minutes when Marcus Thuram flicked Federico Dimarco’s corner towards goal and the ball bounced in off Marusic. Lazio struggled to recover and rarely threatened Inter’s back line.
The second goal arrived in the 35th minute after Nuno Tavares lost possession near his own area. Denzel Dumfries stole the ball and squared for Martinez, who tapped home from close range for his 22nd goal of the season in all competitions.
Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri admitted his side could not match Inter’s level.
“I’m disappointed for the boys, because morale is low at the moment, and for the fans who came back tonight,” Sarri said.
“Tonight we just came up against a better team than us.”
The second half drifted at Inter’s pace. Lazio created little, while Inter nearly added a third when Luis Henrique fired wide from Dimarco’s low cross.
Lazio’s supporters backed the team throughout the final but again directed chants at club owner Claudio Lotito. Sections of the fanbase have boycotted home matches this season in protest against his leadership.
Inter comfortably saw out the final minutes before lifting the trophy in Rome.
