The seventh edition of the Nepal Cultural International Film Festival (NCIFF), organised by the Nepal Culture and Film Centre, will take place in Kathmandu from January 30 to February 1. Among the 85 semifinalist films from 39 countries, one of the most talked-about entries this year is the Bangladeshi documentary ‘I’m Telling You’, directed by filmmaker Sahadat Russell.
The documentary has drawn attention for its unflinching portrayal of Russell’s personal struggle as a human rights filmmaker in Bangladesh. I’m Telling You explores the harsh realities faced by artists and writers who challenge extremism and injustice, highlighting the serious threats Russell has encountered in his pursuit of truth. The film stands as both a testament to his resilience and a powerful reflection on the risks borne by those who use cinema as a form of resistance.
Festival co-director Srishti Neupane said this year’s edition received more than 700 submissions from over 75 countries, with 138 films officially selected. Of these, 85 films, including I’m Telling You, were shortlisted for the competitive sections.
Festival director Santosh Subedi noted that NCIFF celebrates diverse voices and themes, ranging from women’s and children’s issues to human rights and cultural identity. Within this context, Russell’s documentary resonates strongly, serving as a reminder of the dangers faced by filmmakers who confront oppressive forces through their work.
At the closing ceremony, awards will be presented to 30 films, 15 national and 15 international, across categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Documentary and Best Human Rights Film.
