Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has urged that Dhaka’s future traffic management must be technology-based, emphasising that modern urban administration is impossible without smart traffic systems.
He made the remarks on Wednesday during a day-long workshop titled “Urban traffic management in Dhaka: Challenges, innovation, and progress directions” at Police Staff College Bangladesh, according to a press release.
Highlighting the challenges of rapid urbanisation, increasing vehicles, and expanded city mobility, the IGP said coordinated efforts from all stakeholders are essential.
He noted that the Prime Minister has already issued directives for effective initiatives to reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka.
Addressing police officers, he stressed the symbolic role of traffic personnel, saying, “A traffic sergeant on the road represents not just traffic control but the law and order of the state. Their professionalism and conduct directly affect public trust in the police.”
The workshop, presided over by Kazi Md Fazlul Karim, Rector of the Police Staff College, included presentations by acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar and Deputy Commissioner Sufian Ahmed, who reviewed the current traffic situation, causes of congestion, law enforcement realities, and innovative, technology-driven solutions.
Participants discussed actionable recommendations to improve traffic management, including better public transport systems, efficient bus route planning, integration of non-motorized transport, tackling illegal parking, enhancing pedestrian safety, citizen awareness, and inter-agency coordination.
Special speakers included Additional IGPs AKM Awlad Hossain, Mosleh Uddin Ahmad, and Sardar Nurul Amin, who shared insights on overcoming Dhaka’s traffic challenges.
The workshop concluded with a focus on implementing technology-based management, improving law enforcement efficiency, and coordinated efforts among relevant agencies.
Officials said the recommendations would guide future urban traffic planning and sustainable solutions for Dhaka. The closing remarks were delivered by acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar.
