Unidentified miscreants vandalised idols at a Kali temple in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia on Sunday evening, damaging preparations for the upcoming Durga Puja festival.
The incident occurred around 8:15pm at the Sworupdah Palpara Kali Temple in Poradah union. Temple committee president Amresh Ghosh said the heads and hands of the Kartik and Saraswati idols were smashed. “At the time there was a power outage and light rain in the area. Taking advantage of the darkness, they carried out the act,” he said.

The idols had just been completed for Durga Puja, with painting scheduled to begin Monday. “The temple is guarded every night, but after the outage we discovered the damage,” Ghosh added.
Superintendent of Police(SP) Md Mizanur Rahman and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) 12 Kushtia Camp Company Commander Sudipto Sarkar visited the temple shortly after receiving reports. Leaders of different political parties also went to the site.
Mirpur police station officer-in-charge Mominul Islam said law enforcers immediately responded and further details would be shared in due course. Company Commander Sudipto Sarkar confirmed that an investigation has been launched.
