Five more suspected measles-related deaths were reported in Bangladesh in 24 hours to 8am on Thursday, raising the total death toll to 955 since the current outbreak began on 15 March, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of the total deaths, 856 were classified as suspected measles-related deaths, while 99 were laboratory-confirmed. No confirmed measles deaths were recorded during the latest 24-hour period.
The country also recorded 956 new suspected measles cases and 75 new confirmed cases during the same 24-hour period. This takes the cumulative number of suspected cases to 153,692 and confirmed cases to 18,726 since the outbreak started on 15 March.
Among the latest five suspected deaths, three were reported in Dhaka and two in Sylhet.
Dhaka recorded the highest number of new suspected cases in the last 24 hours with 382, followed by Chattogram with 250, Barishal with 109 and Sylhet with 104.
Dhaka also registered the highest cumulative number of suspected measles cases at 66,828. This is followed by Chattogram with 29,737 and Barishal with 16,819 cumulative suspected cases.
The DGHS reported that 134,437 suspected measles patients have been admitted to hospitals since the outbreak began, of whom 129,489 have been discharged.
During the latest 24-hour period, 864 patients were admitted to hospitals and 724 were discharged.
