Bangladesh and Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom have discussed accelerating the remaining work of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and taking necessary steps to supply electricity from the facility to the national grid at the earliest.
Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam held a bilateral meeting with Rosatom Energy Projects Joint-Stock Company Director General Andrey Rozhdestvin in Washington DC on 26 August, where they discussed the project’s overall progress, completion of pending activities, nuclear fuel and broader cooperation in the energy sector.
During the meeting, Faqir Mahbub Anam said the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant would play an important role in meeting Bangladesh’s growing electricity demand, ensuring energy security and supporting long-term sustainable development, according to a ministry press release.
He stressed the need for stronger coordination among all parties involved to complete the remaining work quickly and properly, while ensuring electricity supply to the national grid through the required technical process.
Andrey Rozhdestvin briefed the minister on the project’s progress and expressed readiness to work closely with Bangladesh to advance different stages of the plant according to the planned schedule.
Discussions also covered the peaceful use of nuclear energy, nuclear power generation, technical cooperation, skilled manpower development and ways to further strengthen collaboration in the energy sector.
Both sides expressed interest in deepening cooperation and mutual understanding in nuclear science, technology and energy.
Senior officials and representatives from the relevant organisations attended the meeting.
