A Dhaka court on Thursday imposed a travel ban on Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, the chairman of the banned Awami Jubo League, his wife advocate Nahid Sultana, and another individual named Tanjin Wahab Brishti.
Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The identity of Tanjin Wahab Brishti could not be confirmed.
ACC Deputy Director AKM Mahbubur Rahman submitted the application seeking the travel ban. The application stated that an enquiry is currently underway into allegations that Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and his family members have accumulated a vast amount of illegal wealth.
According to the application, information has been received indicating that they are attempting to flee the country during the enquiry. It was further noted that if they leave the country, the enquiry activities might be severely hampered, making it essential to prevent their travel abroad to ensure a proper probe.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, the exact location of the members of the Sheikh family has not been known. It is also unconfirmed where Sheikh Parash and his wife are currently staying.
Meanwhile, an audio recording of a conversation between Sheikh Parash and an expatriate journalist residing in Australia was found on YouTube approximately three months ago.
During the tenure of the interim government, the activities of both the Awami League and its youth affiliate, the Jubo League, were banned, and this prohibition remains active. The court’s travel restriction on the Jubo League chairman and his wife was ordered amidst these ongoing bans.
