Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said the government plans to set up three to four new floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) to address the country’s gas shortage, with private investors from Korea, China and the United States joining the initiative.
He made the remarks on Monday while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on energy organised by the Foreign Investors’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry at a hotel in Dhaka.
Outlining the government’s roadmap for the country’s energy sector and economic reforms, the finance minister said that, alongside Matarbari, a new location with a draft depth of 20 metres had been identified near Khulna.
A modern terminal equipped to unload oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) directly from large vessels will be established at the site, which is planned to serve as an energy hub, he said.
He said the energy sector had become central to the economy amid the global economic crisis and the situation in the Middle East.
The current government is working tirelessly to overcome major challenges inherited from the previous administration, including a revenue deficit, disorder in the banking sector and the siphoning of dollars abroad, he added.
