The long-running street programme ‘Pather Panchali’ is set to return to the screen, with filmmaker and presenter Debashish Biswas confirming that a new season will air on Ekushey Television after Eid-ul-Fitr.
The show, which enjoyed widespread popularity during its original run, was known for its lively outdoor format. Moving away from the studio setting, Debashish travelled to various locations, engaging members of the public in spontaneous and often humorous exchanges. The programme quickly became a viewer favourite for its candid style and street-level interactions.
Debashish, son of the late filmmaker Dilip Biswas, first rose to prominence through hosting the programme. He later established himself as a director, but audiences have continued to associate him closely with Pather Panchali for more than two decades.
Speaking about the revival, Debashish said the decision followed repeated requests from viewers who had long called for the show’s return. He added that discussions with Ekushey Television regarding several potential projects eventually led to serious consideration of bringing back the iconic programme. Over time, those conversations developed into a concrete plan for a new installment.
The forthcoming season is expected to coincide with the channel’s anniversary celebrations, adding further significance to the relaunch. While the essence of the show will remain rooted in public engagement, Debashish indicated that certain aspects of the format may be updated to reflect changing times and audience expectations.
Acknowledging that both the media landscape and his own career have evolved, he expressed optimism that Pather Panchali can re-emerge in a refreshed form while retaining the spirit that once made it a household name.
