Seven of the BCB’s 25 directors have now resigned before the current board has completed six months in office, and president Aminul Islam says he has no intention of being among them.
Four directors stepped down on Saturday alone, following a lengthy board meeting. Faizur Rahman, Shaniyan Tanim, Mehrab Alam, and Monjur Alam all confirmed their departures after the session concluded, joining Ishtiaque Sadeque, Amjad Hossain, and Yasir Mohammad Foysal Ashiq, who had resigned previously.
Speaking to Jamuna Television after the meeting, Aminul Islam was asked whether the board might eventually be bowled out entirely as directors continued to exit one by one. He smiled and responded: “I’ll just sit there with a chair. What else can I do?”
He then added in: “I will be the last person to go.”
Aminul claimed he does not know why his directors have been resigning, but was clear about where he places the blame for the broader instability. “We have been running the board for around six months. Not for a single day have we been able to work in peace. An external force has constantly been disturbing us and continues to do so,” he said.
He suggested the board has been unfairly held to account for matters predating its tenure, including issues in women’s cricket from eight years ago and decisions made by previous administrations.
The board Aminul leads has been under formal scrutiny since 11 March, when the National Sports Council formed a five-member investigation committee to examine allegations of irregularities and lack of transparency in last October’s elections. The committee was given 15 working days to submit its findings.
Asked what he would do if the government took an adverse decision against the board following the investigation report, Aminul was measured but resolute. “I came here leaving everything behind to serve my country. If for some reason I am no longer in this position, no problem. I will find another path. But I want to work for my country.”
