Towhid Hridoy struck his maiden Test century as Bangladesh reached 205/7 at lunch on the third day of the second Test against West Indies at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Hridoy reached the landmark off 170 balls and remained unbeaten on 100 at the break, while Taijul Islam was batting on one off 14 deliveries. Bangladesh still trailed West Indies by 151 runs in the first innings.

The century came after Hridoy had already helped Bangladesh avoid the follow-on earlier in the morning session. The young batter showed patience and responsibility as wickets continued to fall around him.

Resuming the day at 88/3, Bangladesh lost Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das in the first hour. Hridoy, who had shared a 73-run fourth-wicket stand with Mushfiqur, then joined Mehidy Hasan Miraz to take Bangladesh past the follow-on mark of 157.

Hridoy had earlier completed his maiden Test fifty off 109 balls with a square cut for four against Joshua Bishop. He continued to build his innings, using sweeps and drives through the covers to keep the scoreboard moving.

However, Bangladesh lost two more wickets before lunch, leaving Hridoy with the lower order as he completed his first Test hundred.

Jomel Warrican remained the most successful West Indies bowler, taking three wickets for 60 runs in 25 overs.

West Indies had posted 356 in their first innings, leaving Bangladesh with plenty of work to do despite Hridoy’s landmark knock.
