Towhid Hridoy’s maiden Test century turned into a landmark innings as the Bangladesh batter rewrote the record books against West Indies in Sylhet on Saturday.

In his third Test and fifth innings, Hridoy became only the fourth Bangladesh batter to score a double century, joining Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan. But he achieved something none of them had: becoming the first Bangladeshi to convert his maiden Test hundred into a double century.

Before Hridoy, Mominul Haque held the record for the highest score on a first Test century by a Bangladesh batter, having made 181 against New Zealand in 2013.

Tamim’s six-hitting record falls

Hridoy’s innings featured 10 sixes, the most by a Bangladesh batter in a single Test innings. Tamim had held the record with seven sixes in his 206 against Pakistan in Khulna in 2015. Tamim hit three sixes after passing
180 on his way to that double century.

Sylhet gets its first Test double century

Since making its Test debut in 2018, Sylhet International Cricket Stadium had not witnessed a double century. Hridoy ended that wait, surpassing Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s 171 against Ireland last year as the highest individual score at the venue.

Hridoy and Taijul Islam added 117 runs for the eighth wicket after Bangladesh had lost their seventh wicket. It was the first century partnership for the eighth wicket at the Sylhet venue, eclipsing the previous best of 67 between Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya against Bangladesh in 2024.

The stand was also the second-highest for the eighth wicket in Bangladesh’s Test history. Mushfiqur and
Mehidy Hasan Miraz remain at the top with their unbeaten 144-run partnership against Zimbabwe in 2018. The only other century stand for the eighth wicket by Bangladesh came in 2010, when Mushfiqur and Naeem Islam added 113 against England.

Most runs from boundaries in an innings

Hridoy’s 340-ball innings featured 22 fours and eight sixes, bringing him 136 runs from boundaries. It is the most runs scored through boundaries by a Bangladesh batter in a single Test innings, surpassing Shakib Al Hasan’s previous record of 124. Shakib had struck 31 fours in his 217 against New Zealand in 2017.
