Sony Pictures Animation and Amazon MGM Studios are teaming up for a fifth instalment in the Hotel Transylvania franchise, titled The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania, which is set to hit theatres on 8 October 2027.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation and Amazon MGM Studios will co-produce the animated film, with Sony handling the North American theatrical release and select international territories. Amazon MGM Studios will manage distribution in several global markets, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Italy, Australia, Brazil and New Zealand, while Sony will oversee the remaining territories.
The new film marks the franchise’s return to cinemas after the fourth instalment, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, was released exclusively on Prime Video in 2022. The decision came after Sony licensed the film to Amazon during the Covid-19 pandemic, when theatres remained closed. As part of that agreement, Amazon MGM Studios secured the opportunity to co-produce the next film.
The Hotel Transylvania franchise has earned $1.38 billion worldwide and follows Dracula, his daughter Mavis and their monster friends as they navigate life at the famous monster resort, away from the human world.
In The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania, Dracula has happily retired while Mavis takes charge of the legendary hotel. However, a series of mysterious and frightening events forces the Drac Pack into a new adventure as they attempt to uncover the secret behind the haunting.
Jennifer Kluska and Alan Hawkins will direct the fifth film, with Lawrence Jonas serving as producer. Genndy Tartakovsky and Michelle Murdocca will join as executive producers.
“From the beginning, Hotel Transylvania has invited audiences into a world where monsters feel like family,” Sony Pictures Animation Presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville said. They added that the new film will honour the franchise’s legacy of humour and heart while bringing fresh surprises for audiences.
Amazon MGM Studios Head of Film Courtenay Valenti said the franchise has become a beloved tradition for families worldwide, balancing humour with emotional storytelling. She added that the studio is excited to work with Sony Pictures Animation to bring the Drac Pack back to theatres.
Sony Pictures Animation released the first Hotel Transylvania film in 2012, which earned $355 million worldwide. The second and third films, Hotel Transylvania 2 and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, earned $475 million and $530 million worldwide respectively.
The 8 October 2027 release date will also feature an untitled Blumhouse event film, an untitled Disney movie and an untitled Cineverse horror feature.
