West Indies continued their dominant run at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on 19 February 2026, defeating Italy by 42 runs to seal a fourth consecutive group-stage victory and book their place in the Super Eight.

Led by captain Shai Hope’s fluent half-century and a devastating spell from Shamar Joseph, the two-time champions once again underlined their credentials in Group C.

After winning the toss, Italy chose to field at Eden Gardens, hoping to restrict the Caribbean side. Instead, West Indies produced a disciplined batting display to post 165 for 6 from their 20 overs.

Hope was the architect of the innings. The right-hander struck 75 from 46 deliveries, combining composure with calculated aggression. His knock featured six boundaries and four sixes, and he ensured momentum through the middle overs.

Roston Chase added a steady 24 from 25 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford provided late impetus with an unbeaten 24 off 15 deliveries. For Italy, Ben Manenti and Crishan Kalugamage claimed two wickets each but struggled to stem the scoring rate.

In reply, Italy never truly threatened the target. Despite brief resistance from Manenti, who made 26, and JJ Smuts, who contributed 24, wickets fell at regular intervals.

The turning point came with Joseph’s incisive spell. The pacer claimed four wickets, breaking the backbone of Italy’s batting order and ensuring there would be no late surge. Matthew Forde offered strong support with three wickets, while Gudakesh Motie chipped in with two.

Italy were eventually bowled out for 123 in 18 overs, handing West Indies a comprehensive 42-run win.
