Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh is rewriting the playbook for sustainability in Bangladesh’s cement industry. With a significant focus on environmental and governance criteria, the multinational cement manufacturer now leads its peers, rising to the fourth position among publicly traded firms.
“98.26% of our revenue now comes from sustainable products,” said Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh Managing Director Ong Kian Hock Terence while sharing the company’s sustainability achievements and commitments.
As part of the German Heidelberg Materials Group, a global leader with over 150 years of experience, the company is leveraging its expertise to set new standards in green construction. Sustainability is embedded deeply in the company’s DNA.
“It is not just about products,” Terence added. “Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, from production to energy consumption.”
A bold step forward in low-carbon cement
At the heart of this transformation are the company’s next-generation low-carbon products. These include PCC Max-52.5N, SRC, and EvoBuild—cement products designed to cut carbon emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional cement.
These products aren’t just a new line of offerings. They represent a fundamental shift in how the industry works.
“We are offering the market something new—products that are both environmentally responsible and durable,” Terence said.
For instance, EvoBuild is designed to stand the test of time while significantly reducing carbon emissions.
“This reflects our transformation and our belief that green construction is the future,” Terence explained.
Innovating with renewable energy
Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop with low-carbon products. The company has pioneered a hybrid energy model, combining solar and wind power, at its Chattagram plant. This is the first time such a model has been introduced in Bangladesh’s cement sector.
“We wanted to do more than just reduce emissions with our products,” Terence said.
The company is also reducing reliance on fossil fuels by integrating renewable energy. Installing 0.8 MW of solar power and a pilot 20 kW wind turbine at its Chattagram plant was a crucial step in our journey.
This hybrid renewable energy system not only supports the company’s sustainability goals but also contributes to Bangladesh’s broader energy transition.
Revolutionizing production with Industry 4.0
Digitalization is another key element in Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh’s sustainability strategy. The company has embraced Industry 4.0 technologies, including AI-driven expert systems and robotics truck loading systems, to optimize energy use, reduce waste, and improve overall production efficiency. These technologies are game-changers, Terence said.
“They allow us to use energy more efficiently and reduce rework, improving our production process while cutting down on energy consumption. Industry 4.0 is a huge part of our sustainability strategy.”
With these digital tools, Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh is not only increasing operational efficiency but also reducing its environmental impact—one smart system at a time.
Social responsibility: Impact beyond production
Sustainability at Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh extends beyond environmental efforts. The company is deeply invested in social responsibility through its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, which focus on education, healthcare, and urban infrastructure development.
“We want to be a part of the communities where we operate,” Terence said. “It is not just about producing cement—it is about creating lasting positive change.”
The company also ensures transparency and good governance across its operations. Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh has allocated Tk75 crore toward carbon reduction projects through 2030, ensuring that its sustainability efforts remain strong and on track.
Profitability and sustainability go hand in hand
Sustainability is not just an environmental or social responsibility for Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh—it’s also good business.
By investing in low-carbon products and renewable energy, the company is tapping into emerging green markets and reducing its operational costs. The impact has been substantial.
“EvoBuild is helping us capture the growing demand for green materials,” Terence said.
“And our investment in solar energy is already saving us significantly on electricity. Sustainability and profitability are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they go hand in hand.”
Setting bold goals for the future
With the future in mind, Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh has set ambitious sustainability goals. This year, the company plans to solidify its position as the market leader in low-carbon products and fully implement Industry 4.0 digital tools.
By 2030, it aims to reduce CO₂ emissions to 400 kg per tonne of cement and ensure that 100% of its revenue comes from sustainable products.
But the vision doesn’t stop there. “Our long-term goal is to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050,” Terence said.
“We want to continue leading the way in integrating green energy solutions and circular business models, setting a regional benchmark for low-carbon construction materials.”
Shaping a sustainable future for Bangladesh
Through its commitment to low-carbon products, renewable energy, and digital transformation, the company is proving that sustainability is not just an ideal but a practical, profitable strategy. The company is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future for Bangladesh.
“At Heidelberg Materials Bangladesh, we’re not just making cement; we’re building a better, more sustainable future for Bangladesh,” Terence concluded.
“Our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and social responsibility ensures that we’re leaving a lasting impact on both the industry and the communities we serve.”
