The High Court has summoned the Director General (DG) of the Health Services Division to appear in person and explain a contempt of court charge.
DG Probhat Chandra Biswas has been directed to appear before the court on 19 May to provide an explanation regarding the allegations.
A High Court bench, comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Asif Hasan, passed the order on Thursday following a hearing on the contempt of court petition.
The case pertains to recruitment notifications issued for third and fourth-class employee positions in various districts under the Ministry of Health. While candidates from across the country applied, 25 individuals who had passed the written examination were reportedly shown as “unsuccessful” and were subsequently denied appointments.
The 25 candidates challenged the legality of this action by filing a writ petition with the High Court.
On 9 March 2022, following a hearing, the court ordered the authorities to appoint the petitioners.
Despite the High Court’s verdict, the authorities failed to appoint the candidates even after being contacted multiple times. The State later sought a stay on the High Court’s judgment; however, the Appellate Division upheld the original ruling.
Following this, the petitioners filed a contempt of court application, leading the High Court to issue a rule.
The petitioners’ lawyer, Siddique Ullah Miah, told the media that the concerned authorities of the health directorate had “unfairly attempted to deprive” these job seekers.
He expressed his expectation that the authorities would respect the court’s order and implement the verdict by appointing the candidates as soon as possible.
