The High Court has directed the filling of all abandoned deep tube wells across the country to prevent accidents. The concerned authorities, including the Local Government Secretary, have been instructed to implement this directive within three months.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar issued this order on Monday, 23 February, following a hearing on a writ petition.
Earlier, a writ petition was filed with the High Court attaching reports regarding incidents of children dying after falling into abandoned deep tube wells in various parts of the country. Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Monir Uddin filed the writ petition in the public interest. He argued the case on behalf of the writ petition.
Lawyer Mohammad Monir Uddin told Times, “The death of the child Jihad in 2014 after falling into an abandoned deep tube well in the Railway Colony in Shahjahanpur had shaken the nation. Additionally, in December 2025, the child Sajid died after falling into an abandoned deep tube well in Tanore, Rajshahi. Most recently, on 28 January this year, the child Misbah died after falling into an abandoned deep tube well in Raozan Upazila, Chittagong. Attaching reports of these incidents, I filed the writ petition with the High Court. After hearing the writ, the court has directed that all abandoned deep tube wells be filled and a report submitted within three months.”
